Time Out New York

As Editor-in-Chief of Time Out New York, I led the print and digital teams to cover the very best of going out in the world's best city. Every week—and every day online—we wrote extensively about the must-dos, the artists behind them them, and how you could enjoy them, too, leading to three ASME nominations and increased audience and revenue.

Here are a few highlights of my tenure there:

The New York 40 Issue

Editor-in-Chief | Interviewer

For this epic 40th anniversary issue, I interviewed Jay-Z and Mayor Mike Bloomberg and led the team to secure interviews and photoshoots with 38 other NYC legends, including Derek Jeter, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Patti LuPone and Spider-Man. "My favorite New Yorker?" wondered Jay-Z. "JFK Jr. How he would take the subway and walk around the neighborhood." Bloomberg's fave: "I'd be crazy if I didn't pick Tina Fey."

Banksy and Shepard Fairey Exclusive Covers

Editor-in-Chief

The most famous figures in street art created exclusive covers for Time Out when I was Editor-in-Chief. Banksy created an NYC rat cover, which now sells for thousands of dollars. And Shepard Fairey—he behind the Obama "Hope" poster—crafted this graphic image for our Summer Arts Preview.

Sex and the City Backlash Cover

Editor-in-Chief

Weeks before the Sex and the City movie, the media hype was ridiculous—outlets were doing stories on Carrie's favorite shoes, food, and underwear. So we came up with a Sex-free issue, and illustrated it by covering the characters' mouths with tape. It started trend stories ("Sex and the City backlash begins," read the Drudge Report and the Guardian). That week, Sarah Jessica Parker commented on the cover on Charlie Rose.

Sex and Dating Section

Writer, Editor-in-Chief

The addition of a Sex and Dating section scored coverage in the New York Times, in their article called "Attractions of New York, Laid Bare." "Many city magazines court singles and sex-related advertising. Time Out New York has decided to make it part of its editorial content."

Our 30 Rock Episode

Editor-in-Chief

Years after I interviewed Tina Fey, a two-parter on 30 Rock was built around Fey and Jane Krakowski’s characters competing to be on the cover of Time Out New York. We normally covered the zeitgeist; now we were a part of it.
